Gabby Agbonlahor has reacted on Instagram to Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford earning an England call ahead of Aston Villa’s Danny Ings and Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for the forthcoming qualifiers, with Bamford earning a maiden call, alongside the usual suspects that reached the Euro 2020 final.
Last season, Harry Kane was the only Englishman to outscore the Leeds man in the Premier League, so from that perspective, it’s very much deserved.
Someone like Ings, who has been part of Southgate’s plans before, wasn’t picked despite scoring two from two games this season following his summer transfer to Villa Park.
That seemingly left ex-Villa man Agbonlahor unhappy at the breaking news that was filtering through on Thursday afternoon.
When Sportsbible posted on Instagram about Bamford’s inclusion, Agbonlahor issued this pretty blunt response in the comments section, as he reacted to the breaking news: “Greenwood and Ings must play squash.”
Bamford will now join his fellow Leeds teammate Kalvin Phillips at St George’s Park next month.
The rise of the two players has been pretty remarkable and the job Marcelo Bielsa has done with them is also incredible.
Phillips was a rising star from the Thorp Arch academy, who liked to bomb forward and thought he was going to become that goalscoring midfielder.
But Bielsa transformed his game and turned him into a defensive machine that can ping passes like he has a Playstation controller in his hands.
As for Bamford, the player that struggled to make his mark at places like Chelsea and Middlesbrough, before turning up in Yorkshire.
He is now one of the top marksmen in the country, with high-quality attacking movement and a pressing game that makes him a coaches dream.
