Premier League rivals Aston Villa, Southampton and Crystal Palace look set to miss out as Borussia Dortmund star Thomas Delaney has headed to Spain for a medical at Sevilla, as reported by Kicker.

It’s not often one of the finest midfielders in the country loses his place to a 17-year-old. But, as you’ve probably worked out by now, Jude Bellingham is no ordinary teenager.

And with the England international now one of the first names on the Borussia Dortmund team sheet – coupled with the unexpected renaissance of Mo Dahoud – Denmark international Delaney has been relegated to a watching brief these days.

The 29-year-old has just ten months left on his contract too and Dortmund won’t stand in his way should an acceptable offer arrive.

Delaney remains an important part of the squad – a natural-born leader on and off the pitch – but the German giants are in no position to turn down a multimillion-pound offer for an ageing, seldom-seen midfielder who will be a free agent this time next summer.

Aston Villa, Southampton and Crystal Palace all wanted Dortmund star Thomas Delaney

According to Homme du Match, Aston Villa were weighing up a bid for Delaney having made a disciplined, hard-running number six their top priority heading into the final week of the transfer window.

Delaney will touch down on the citrus-soaked streets of Seville today, however, as he undergoes a medical at the La Liga side.

It’s understood Sevilla will pay a bargain £5 million, with the former Werder Bremen and Copenhagen enforcer expected to sign a deal until 2024 or 2025 (Marca).

With Delaney out of reach, Aston Villa could now step up their interest in Juventus’ versatile USA international Weston McKennie.

The Midlands giants also made a £10 million bid for Lens youngster Cheick Doucoure earlier this month.
