Samuel Umtiti’s attitude is outraging Barcelona, who will insist of further talks with the rumoured Everton target to find a solution for him to leave the club, according to Sport.
The Frenchman has stunned Camp Nou executives with his refusal to accept he must leave Catalunya before next Tuesday’s deadline. Umtiti is hellbent on seeing out his Barcelona contract, even though Ronald Koeman has outright expressed he is not a part of his plans.
Barcelona have already informed Umtiti that they do not accept his attitude, as he has not entertained some proposals. The La Liga giants will not leave the situation as it currently is and are determined to hold further discussions to try and find a resolution.
Barcelona want to meet Umtiti and his representatives imminently to find some common ground to leave, amid interest from Everton. The Mirror report chiefs at Goodison Park feel they can convince the defender of a late window Premier League switch.
The Toffees hope the prospect of playing under Rafa Benitez will help overcome Umtiti’s adamant desire for Champions League football. Yet Barcelona still fear he will say no to any transfer, which would only incense the club even further.
Barca executives are adamant that a transfer away from the La Liga outfit is Umtiti’s only option. It is possible that they even look to terminate his €4m-a-year (£66k-p/w) contract, per Sport, if he keeps overlooking moves.
Should Everton sign Barcelona defender Umtiti?
Everton have had mixed success with their recent Barcelona imports, with Lucas Digne a real gem at Goodison Park. Andre Gomes showed promise during his year on loan before sealing a permanent move, but the Liverpool Echo note his future was unclear this summer.
Benitez also planned to offload Yerry Mina, per Sport, yet the Colombian remains and started Saturday’s draw at Leeds. Now, Everton can unite the former Barcelona centre-back with a current one, as Koeman’s side urge Umtiti to leave.
Benitez would relish working with Umtiti if the Frenchman can stay fit, as frequent injuries blighted his Camp Nou career. A knee injury has proven a particular plight since 2018 after playing through the pain at the 2018 World Cup. But Mundo Deportivo note he underwent an exhaustive medical with knee injury specialist Dr Ramon Cugat to prove his fitness.
