After months of teases and rumoured cast reveals, the first trailer for the highly anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home has just dropped and oh boy, are we excited.
As well as showing off Peter Parker’s new life now that his identity as Spider-Man has been revealed, the trailer also welcomes back a familiar face or two.
However, one moment in the No Way Home trailer has left fans puzzled as many are struggling to work out who says the line “Be careful what you wish for, Parker.”
Released overnight on August 23rd/24th depending on where you are in the world, the trailer for No Way Home has been hugely anticipated, especially following an apparent leak a day earlier.
The trailer begins with Peter struggling to adjust after his secret identity was revealed at the end of Far From Home and so he turns to Doctor Strange for help.
He hopes that Strange can erase the knowledge that he is Spider-Man from everyone on Earth, something which Wong strongly advises against.
However, when voicing his worries about MJ, Ned and Aunt May not remembering, Doctor Strange’s spell appears to go wrong, causing all sorts of chaos to emerge.
Who says ‘Be careful what you wish for?’
- The voice appears to belong to Doctor Strange.
At the 2:30 mark in the trailer, the screen cuts to black and we hear a grim and severe voice saying: “Be careful what you wish for, Parker.”
The voice has led to confusion among fans as many can’t quite work out who is speaking.
To this writer’s ears, the voice sounds like that of Doctor Strange, especially thanks to the way he says “Parker” which we also hear earlier in the trailer.
However, the voice sounds almost antagonistic which would suggest that Spider-Man and Doctor Strange don’t stay allies throughout the film, something which is backed up by several shots during the trailer.
Most notably the train scene, where it looks like Peter and Strange are in the middle of a fight as well as the shot of Strange pushing Peter’s astral form out of his body.
Could the “Be careful what you wish for” line be coming as a warning early on in the film, before Strange casts the spell? Or could it be as a reprimand after something has gone horribly wrong?
Fans have several other ideas
While Doctor Strange seems to be the most likely candidate behind the disembodied voice, Spider-Man fans have wasted no time in suggesting other potential candidates.
James Franco as a returning Harry Osborn | Of the suggestions from fans on social media, this one is the most likely as the voice most closely resembles that of James Franco. However, the actor has not featured in either of the confirmed or rumoured cast, making it unlikely to be him.
Willem Dafoe as Norman ‘Green Goblin’ Osborn | While the line may follow the Green Goblin’s cackling laugh in the trailer, this suggestion seems highly unlikely as the voice sounds nothing like Willem Dafoe.
Dylan Baker as Curt Connors | And finally, this suggestion comes very much out of left field as one fan theorised that it could be a returning Curt Connors from Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Again, an actor not mentioned in the rumoured cast so it seems unlikely.
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in cinemas on December 17th, 2021.
