There are many moviegoing experiences that have shaped and stuck with us throughout our lives. For some, heading into the cinema has become as habitual as waking up in the morning – simply second nature.

However, there remain some unshakeable memories that we have of being eclipsed by darkness, ready to witness something truly special as we’re soaked under the light of the silver screen.

Marvel fans will likely remember the first time they saw 2012’s The Avengers, for example, or the monumental heartbreak of Avengers: Endgame. Then there’s the birth of the MCU itself which came courtesy of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008.

Long before these iconic films, on the other hand, there was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Two years prior, X-Men opened up groundbreaking new possibilities for superhero cinema and Tobey Maguire’s first outing as the web-slinger cemented comic-book adaptations as not just blockbuster gold, but adventures of a lifetime for audiences.

Many film fans will never forget the first time they witnessed Spidey take on the Green Goblin, seeing characters they’d perhaps grown up with in print translate to the big screen in ways they never could have imagined.

As Hollywood very well knows, nostalgia is a powerful thing and viewers have been struck with waves of it thanks to the teaser trailer for Tom Holland’s latest and third stand-alone outing as your friendly neighborhood hero.

There are many takeaways from the exhilarating footage, but most have one pressing question in mind… is Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Is Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

  • Yes, Willem Dafoe’s casting in Spider-Man: No Way Home is essentially confirmed by the film’s teaser trailer. Those familiar with Spider-Man will recognise that the character’s iconic laugh as delivered by Willem in the blockbuster can be heard clearly, although he doesn’t appear explicitly. Instead, we have visuals of a Pumpkin Bomb rolling past cars before exploding in a destructive spectacle.

The 66-year-old American actor has long been rumoured to star in the highly anticipated project.

Earlier in August, The Wrap asked the man himself whether he’d be appearing and he replied “no comment”, going on to explain: “I got lots of stuff happening now. And, you know, I always feel like when a film comes out, that’s when it’s time to talk about it.”

Although this may appear discouraging, this is somewhat common practice when it comes to MCU movies, with the studio and team striving to maintain secrets so audiences have surprises in store when the film finally releases.

While Willem cannot be seen in the trailer, another iconic presence from Sam Raimi’s Spidey trilogy shows up on screen to help reinforce that this Multiversal narrative will bring in other characters from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films; perhaps even Tobey himself.

That’s right. We close with Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octavius greeting Peter, donning the signature robotic tentacles. Spider-Man 2 is increasingly regarded as one of the best superhero films of all time, so needless to say, fans are thrilled to see him reprising the part.
