Back in 2007, Sam Raimi concluded his ambitious and epic trilogy with Spider-Man 3 and it remains a thoroughly divisive blockbuster.

Over the years, Peter Parker’s hair-do and dancing – among other things – have spawned countless memes and many still consider the film a colossal disappointment and major step-down from the critical darling Spider-Man 2.

One of the most widely asserted criticisms of the third installment was that it overcomplicated the formula perfected in previous entries, ushering in too many villains. We had Venom, Hobgoblin, and, of course, Sandman, who is generally considered the strongest and most heartfelt of the trio of antagonists.

Juggling a number of villains can be tricky, but it’s clear that the team behind the third Tom Holland stand-alone isn’t shying away from the challenge.

The latest teaser trailer has confirmed and teased a number of familiar faces from Spidey’s past, from the Tobey Maguire era to Tom’s. It’s worth addressing that fans expected the likes of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octavius to rear his head. On the other hand, discussion has unexpectedly shifted towards another foe…. is Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Is Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

While it’s only Doctor Octopus who is explicitly featured in the trailer, a number of Raimi and Marc Webb-era villains are teased throughout the trailer and Sandman is amongst them, along with Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.

As highlighted by Games Radar, there are multiple shots featured that depict grains of sand soaring through the air, posing a significant threat to the characters gazing up.

The first shows a van from The Daily Bugle and a number of characters (it’s uncertain who they are) being terrorised by the apparent sandstorm, and amidst the chaos is what also appears to be lightning.

It’s likely that this foreshadows the arrival of both Sandman and Electro, who were played in previous films by Thomas Haden Church and Jamie Foxx, respectively. A later shot reinforces this, showing a similar threat of lightning striking down in front of Spider-Man while a gargantuan sandy shape emerges from the ground.

Although the likes of Thomas and Willem etc. haven’t officially confirmed they’re starring in the film, the trailer heavily implies that they’re all aboard for the most ambitious spectacle from the MCU since Avengers: Endgame.

Indeed, Thomas hasn’t exactly been absent from the recent landscape of superhero cinema, as he portrayed Lobster Johnson in 2019’s Hellboy reboot.

Now, with so many villains being teased and glimpsed in the trailer, it’s worth discussing the potential for the Sinister Six…

Could we see the Sinister Six?

Looking back across Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man history, the Sinister Six are a group of supervillains that was assembled by Doctor Octopus, who is confirmed to appear in No Way Home.

He was part of the ensemble alongside Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. However, the line-up of antagonists has varied over the years, shifting from series to series and so forth.

In the No Way Home teaser, it’s suggested that we’ll see Lizard – fans think they’ve spotted him at 2:25 – Electro, Green Goblin, Sandman, and of course, the Doc. That leaves one mysterious member that warrants further speculation.

Could we see Venom finally take on Tom Holland’s web-slinger? There’s potential, and while the likelihood of his entrance will be debated, we’ll certainly be sticking around for the end credits.
