Boavista forward Alberth Elis has confirmed he’s joining Bordeaux despite interest from West Ham United, Southampton and Celtic, speaking to Honduran publication The Herald.

After two years of incessant speculation, it seems we can finally draw a line under a saga that has rumbled on through five transfer windows.

Celtic have been linked with Elis since summer 2019, with Hoops legend Emilio Izaguirre admitting his fellow Honduras international had expressed an interest in joining one of Britain’s most historic football clubs.

In June, A Bola reported Elis may finally be on his way to Glasgow as a potential Odsonne Edouard replacement, even if a £9 million price tag seemed to cast doubts on the legitimacy of those rumours.

The versatile 25-year-old was also linked with Premier League pair West Ham and Southampton.

And he did little to distance himself from those claims, his camp admitting on a number of occasions that the former MLS ace would “jump at the chance” to prove himself on British soil.

But while Elis looks set to miss out on his Premier League “dream”, the chance to share a pitch with the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos should be some consolation.

Celtic and West Ham chased Alberth Elis but he’s Bordeaux-bound

“(I’m) very happy for this opportunity,” Elis said on Sunday, confirming his pending switch to Bordeaux. “I hope to do well in the medical tests and then join the team.

“(It’s) a great step in my career. I am happy for this opportunity. It’s nice to always face the best players and that’s what you train for.

“I am very grateful to (Boavista) for the opportunity they gave me to grow in my career. I will always carry that in my heart.”

Considering Celtic have scored 24 goals in their past six matches, there won’t be too many tears as Elis looks to make his home on the other side of the Channel.
