Alan Shearer has said on Twitter that Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was not fouled in the build-up to the Southampton goal this past weekend.

What’s the story?

Southampton played out a 1-1 draw with United at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

An own goal from Fred saw the Saints go ahead on the half-hour mark, but Mason Greenwood resorted parity for the Red Devils in the 55th minute.

There was a controversial incident in the build-up to the Southampton goal.

Saints defender Jack Stephens took the ball away from United midfielder Fernandes before passing it to Moussa Djenepo.

Referee Craig Pawson allowed the play to continue, but there have been suggestions that it was a foul.

What does Alan Shearer think?

Newcastle United legend and BBC Sport pundit Shearer does not think that it was a foul, as you can see below.

Deserved draw

United fans will argue against Shearer’s claim, but it is hard to deny that Southampton deservedly picked up a point from the encounter.

The Saints did not let the Red Devils have their way, especially in the second half, and had chances to win the match.

Yes, Southampton had only 36% of the possession, but they earned as many corners as United did (7) and had one fewer shot on target than the Red Devils (3 against 4).
