The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Release Date Explored

  • Going by the normal filming and release schedule for The Handmaid’s Tale, American viewers would usually expect to see season 5 air around April 2022 on Hulu.

For three of the past four seasons, the filming schedule has commenced in September, seven months ahead of the eventual premiere date.

However, speaking to Hello! in a recent Q&A, showrunner Bruce Miller said: “The writer’s room is starting in a week or two.

“Honestly, a lot of the cast have projects that were unmoored because of Covid for a million reasons so even though our actors are extraordinarily flexible to fit in the work on our show, everybody has things they do.”

As such, with writing only just getting underway as of August, it could well be some time before we get to see the next chapter in June’s story.

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale received major delays during filming thanks to the COVID pandemic. If any delays continue, season 5 could possibly be pushed back to the summer or autumn airing slot of next year.

If American viewers receive the season 5 premiere in the predicted April 2022 slot, UK viewers can expect to see the fifth chapter after all episodes have aired, in around summer or autumn time.

Hulu and MGM renewed the show for season 5 back in December 2020, with showrunner Bruce Miller stating that the cast and crew were “very grateful.”

Will Season 5 Be the Last?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller said that he “doesn’t know” if season 5 will be the last chapter of the show.

While Miller, Moss, and the writing team have talked about the continuation of the show extensively, Miller admitted that after the pandemic, it was a “good time to reassess.”

In another interview with Deadline’s Contenders TV, Miller also said that this passion project would be difficult to walk away from and drop immediately with everything invested.

This concludes that the show’s continuation is still very much up in the air, but the creative minds behind The Handmaid’s Tale, and the fans, are eager for more.
