Micah Richards was absolutely blown away by Tottenham Hotspur fans against Manchester City last weekend.
The Spurs’ supporters made a long-awaited return to the club’s £1 billion stadium.
Because of the pandemic, Tottenham fans haven’t been able to spend that much time in their new home in the grand scheme of things.
And they certainly looked delighted to be back last Sunday, acting as the 12th man to inspire Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to a 1-0 win over Premier League champions Manchester City.
Richards was in attendance and the former City defender has admitted that the home support blew his mind, adding that it might be the most memorable atmosphere he has ever experienced inside a stadium.
He told The Daily Mail: “I couldn’t let this column pass without adding my own thoughts: the trip to Tottenham last Sunday blew my mind. I genuinely didn’t expect the atmosphere to be so tribal and so intense. Being on the side of the pitch, looking up at the stands and listening to everything that was going on made me feel alive. It is not overstating things to say it was one of the best atmospheres I have experienced.”
Tottenham fans were always going to show up and produce an atmosphere last weekend.
Yes, the fact that the stadium hadn’t been at full capacity for 18 months is a big reason, but a bigger factor was the opposition.
Remember, Manchester City are trying to nick Harry Kane, one of the best players to ever come through the Lilywhites’ academy.
Kane’s absence from the squad – and apparent desire to join up with Pep Guardiola’s squad – was always going to motivate the home support and unite the fanbase, which it did.
