What If…? is the newest arrival on our screens and the series is a little different from what came before as it explores several alternate realities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Episode 2 of the animated series focuses on T’Challa and what would happen if he was to take Peter Quill’s place as Star-Lord.

The Guardians of the Galaxy-themed episode is full of cameos from the likes of Nebula, Drax and even Howard the Duck but there are a few notable absences, chief among them being Gamora.

But just why was Gamora missing from What If…? episode 2?

Recap: What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord

Episode 2 of Marvel’s What If…? arrived on Disney+ on August 18th, 2021.

Titled What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord, the episode focuses on T’Challa, who we know in the main MCU as Black Panther.

However, in What If…?, this T’Challa was accidentally taken by Yondu’s crew instead of Peter Quill and has now taken on the role of Star-Lord, much more successfully than the original, it must be said.

As a result, the episode examines what life in the galaxy would look like with T’Challa flying with the Ravagers and explores the very different fates that befall the likes of Nebula, Drax and even Thanos.

Why Gamora wasn’t in What If episode 2

  • Gamora was missing from What If…? episode 2 as Thanos potentially never adopted her as his daughter.

In the Marvel universe that we know, Gamora’s world was attacked by Thanos and her parents were killed. The Mad Titan then adopted Gamora and trained her to become an elite killer.

In the What If…? universe, Thanos was never able to fulfil his genocidal plan as he was seemingly talked out of it by T’Challa and so never attacked Gamora’s planet, Zen-Whoberi.

As a result, Gamora probably grew up to have a normal and peaceful life with her parents.

However, as will be discussed below, Gamora is slated to appear later on in What If…? so perhaps there’s another side to the story that we’ve not been told yet.

Gamora’s future What If…? appearance explored

As shown in the ‘Changed’ trailer, Gamora is still due to appear in What If…? despite being missing from episode 2.

In the brief clips where she features, Gamora can be seen alongside Star-Lord T’Challa, Captain Carter and Killmonger as Black Panther and is seen holding the huge double-bladed sword that Thanos used in Avengers: Endgame and there are a number of question marks regarding how she got it.

In a world of endless possibilities, the exact scenario could be anything, but we have two theories surrounding Gamora’s upcoming appearance.

The first being that season 1 of What If…? is set in just one alternate reality and all the stories we’re seeing are actually connected, hence the forthcoming team-up.

In this case, after Thanos was talked out of his genocidal plan, Gamora could have potentially taken up the reins and Thanos’s sword in order to finish what he started.

Alternatively, if Gamora’s appearance is to take place in another separate reality, it could be one where she potentially overthrew Thanos herself and took up his sword that way.

Either way, it looks like the Gamora we’ll be meeting later on in What If…? is very different to the one we know from the main MCU timeline.
