Everton are hoping to bring Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti to Goodison Park this month, believing Rafael Benitez can tempt him into joining.

That’s according to The Mirror (19/08, p54), who claim that Everton are looking to cash in on Barcelona’s financial problems.

Umtiti wants to play in the Champions League, but it’s suggested that the pull of playing for Rafael Benitez could lure him to Merseyside.

The 27-year-old won the World Cup in 2018 but has struggled since then and now finds himself unwanted at Barcelona.

Sport claim that Barcelona are furious with Umtiti’s reluctance to leave and are now threatening to terminate his contract.

Everton could offer an escape route, sensing a cut-price deal as Barcelona desperately look to shift his £212,000-a-week wages.

Everton surely wouldn’t be matching those wages and would need Umtiti to take a huge cut to his salary in order to secure a deal.

Umtiti has been injury-prone in recent years, managing just 40 league appearances in the last three seasons.

He will know Lucas Digne from international duty, potentially making a move to Goodison Park a little more appealing, but time is running out to get a deal done.
