Trevor Sinclair has told talkSPORT that he feels Mohamed Salah is more important to Liverpool than Virgil van Dijk and believes an increase in salary ought to reflect this.
Liverpool kicked off their Premier League campaign in style on Saturday by thumping Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road.
Van Dijk, making his first appearance since October due to injury, certainly was the focus of the pre-match talk, but Salah stole the show during the game itself.
The Egypt international, who’s contracted to the Reds until 2023, set up two goals and scored a brilliant one himself.
It already looks like being a wonderful season for the former Chelsea and Roma attacker and Sinclair believes that Salah – a £34 million signing in 2017 – is the club’s most important asset, more so than Van Dijk.
He told talkSPORT: “He is a great player and a great goal scorer and unless Liverpool want to risk losing him, they’ve got to give him top dollar. I feel he deserves it. I think he’s their best player, I really do
“We’re talking about Liverpool, so the top earner at Liverpool would be Van Dijk, he’s got to be superseding that. He’s a goal scorer, it’s much more difficult to score goals than it is to do anything else on a football pitch and he does that easily.”
Is he right?
Well not necessarily.
Liverpool had Salah fit all season last term but the Reds’ season collapsed once Van Dijk and Joe Gomez became unavailable, illustrating the importance of those two.
Having said that, Jurgen Klopp’s side only scraped a top-four finish in the end because of Salah’s goals.
It’s safe to say that both Salah and the Dutchman are quite simply massive players for the Anfield club and it’s difficult to argue that one is more important than the other, given the contrast in their roles.
