Premier League outfit Crystal Palace are planning to test Celtic’s resolve with a £7 million bid for Scotland international Callum McGregor, as reported by Homme du Match

If you asked Ange Postecoglou which player he would be loathe to lose before September’s transfer deadline, McGregor’s name surely wouldn’t be far from the manager’s lips.

Not only has the long-serving academy graduate replaced Scott Brown as Celtic’s captain, he also replaced Scott Brown as the club’s go-to conductor.

It is no coincidence that the Hoops have looked a far better, far more functional, free-flowing side with McGregor pulling the strings and setting the tempo from his new-look number six role.

Fortunately for Postecoglou, the 28-year-old is tied down until 2024.

Unlike Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Kristoffer Ajer – who has already departed for Brentford – Celtic are under no immediate pressure to cash in on a player labelled ‘tactically brilliant’ by Brendan Rodgers during their time together at the Scottish Premiership giants.

Is Crystal Palace a no-go for Callum McGregor?

Homme du Match claim that Crystal Palace are hoping to lure McGregor south of the border with a bid in the region of £7 million.

Celtic would welcome the prospect of raising funds for a new right-back or a commanding central defender but not at the expense of McGregor, the club’s on-pitch leader and their 2019 Player of the Year.

It did not go unnoticed that the Crystal Palace side who started the new Premier League season with a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea was largely unchanged from the one that limped to a mid-table finish under Roy Hodgson last term.

Yes Conor Gallagher and Joachim Andersen were both unavailable but there are understandable concerns about the sluggish pace of what was supposed to be a substantial rebuilding project.

Palace look worryingly undercooked with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining.

According to the Sun, the Eagles have also seen a £5 million bid rejected for another midfield target…
