Following a series of cryptic Easter Eggs online, we breakdown everything that we know so far about season 2 of the epic anime ‘Vinland Saga’!

2019 was an incredible year for anime and arguably one of the best new series to launch was the epic Viking tale of ‘Vinland Saga’.

The series had almost everything that fans of action anime could hope for: well-choreographed fight sequences, superb character development and possibly one of the best-written villains of all time – not to mention an incredible opening song by Survive Said The Profit.

Now, one year later, we finally know Thorfinn’s fate!

A renewal in runes…

On September 22nd, 2020, director of Vinland Saga Shuhei Yabuta tweeted three images of the main characters and asked fans of the series to decipher “a small easter egg.”

In the bottom corners of each image, there are Nordic runes and fans quickly figured out that each rune, when translated to English, said “Sea-Son-Two.”

There is also some Japanese text from a conversation between the characters, with Thorfinn asking “How long must we wait?” to which Askeladd replies “That’s why I hate kids…” with Canute adding, “It’s soon…I guess…”

On July 7th, fans got the moment that we had all been waiting for, the official announcement for season 2.

Whilst any official confirmation is welcomed, very few fans were surprised by Vinland Saga’s continuation.

Not only was the first season incredibly popular, scoring 8.8/10 on IMDB and 8.72/10 on MyAnimeList, but there is still plenty of source material from the manga left to adapt.

Vinland Saga season 2 release date predictions…

  • Unfortunately, the release date for Vinland Saga season 2 has not yet been made public, but HITC predicts a January 2022 return.

Whilst the easter eggs do suggest that a season 2 premiere is on the immediate horizon, the lack of additional information indicates that the series will not be ready in time for the Fall slate in October.

This may be because of the production schedule for WIT Studio, the team behind Vinland Saga, who are already working on the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress feature film and the upcoming Vampire In The Garden anime for Netflix.

An optimistic expectation would be for the Winter slate, but fans should also prepare themselves for a longer wait until Spring 2022 if we don’t hear anything more over the next few months.

This could especially be the case if Amazon Prime acquires the broadcasting rights to the anime again; when the platform could wait until the Japanese broadcast has concluded, instead of simulcasting.

We will bring you updates on Vinland Saga as soon as new information is officially released, so keep checking in for the latest news.

S2 director comments on episodes…

The director of Vinland Saga season 2, Shuhei Yubata, recently commented on the number of episodes that the sequel adventure will consist of.

Addressing fan speculation on Twitter, Yubata said that “Season 2 plays a very important role in Vinland Saga. So it is expected that enough number of episodes can be secured to depict emotions of characters carefuly[sic].”

The manga takes a break…

Whilst everyone is excited for season 2 of the anime, there is also bad news for fans of the Vinland Saga franchise.

It was recently revealed that the manga series would be taking a temporary hiatus and will not release a new chapter next month.

Neither a reason for the break nor a return date has been revealed but more information is expected to be shared soon.
