If you saw a report claiming Newcastle United were set to sign a player called Santiago Munoz, you would assume it’s a joke or a prank.
That’s what’s happening right now though, as ESPN in Mexico claim that the Magpies are closing in on a deal for Santos Laguna talent Munoz.
Before you wonder when the equivalent of April Fool’s Day is in Mexico, it’s December 28th – so this is no prank.
Munoz is very close to the name Santiago Munez, the lead character in the Goal! film series in which a Mexican footballer becomes a hero at Newcastle.
ESPN claim that a ‘full agreement’ is in place between Newcastle and Santos Laguna, and the 19-year-old attacker is just one step away from signing for the Magpies.
Given his age, Munoz would likely be one for the future having played just 19 first-team games for Santos Laguna; he’s notched three goals and three assists in that time.

Munoz appears to have a bright future ahead of him, and Spanish side Huesca were looking to sign him before Newcastle swooped in.
It’s not an addition that will immediately bolster Steve Bruce’s side, but Munoz could emerge in the years to come – and maybe live up to feats of Money on the big screen.
