Chris Sutton has said on BBC Sport that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could have an issue with defender Virgil van Dijk.
The former Chelsea striker has asked whether Van Dijk will be at his best after not playing for most of last season.
The BBC Sport pundit has suggested that the Netherlands international central defender’s fitness could be a concern.
Van Dijk suffered a long-term injury back in October and did not play again last season.
The 30-year-old missed the Euro 2020 finals with the Netherlands as well.
However, the former Southampton star has been playing in pre-season for Liverpool.
Sutton told BBC Sport while discussing Liverpool’s title chances this season: “Ibrahima Konate looks like a decent defensive signing but the issue with Van Dijk is how fit is he? How has he been affected by being out for so long and the injury? We will find out.”
Should Liverpool fans worry?
Van Dijk suffered a major knee injury last season, and it is unlikely that the 30-year-old will be at his best straightaway.
It is never easy for any footballer to be out for so many months and then just get back to his best.
It will take Van Dijk a while, but Liverpool fans should have every confidence that he will get back to his best.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a very good and capable manager who will know how to deal with the Dutchman’s situation.
Moreover, the Reds have more options in defence, especially after Ibrahima Konate joined this summer.
