The tragic death of the 16-year-old footballer Drake Geiger has shocked many. The teenager reportedly collapsed 10 minutes into the training session on Tuesday (August 10).
His father Scott Hoffman told the local media that his son suddenly collapsed when he stopped for a drink after finishing his drill.
Who was Drake Geiger?
Drake was a student and football player at Nebraska Omaha South High School. According to his father, he was excited to be playing football again after missing a season.
“He didn’t care if he was playing or on the sidelines. He just wanted to be a part of the team and be around all the guys,” his father said.
He reportedly missed his practice on Monday as his doctor forgot to sign his physical forms. He had his first practice session on Tuesday.
The teenager was reportedly set to get his driver’s license on Wednesday, but he took his last breath a day earlier.
What happened to the teen footballer?
The medical staff has revealed that Drake died of heatstroke.
Drake’s father received a call from the coach around 4:20 pm saying his son had collapsed and he was being taken to UNMC.
According to this source, Scott said the medical staff told him his son’s “internal temperature was around 122 degrees”
“After about 30-45 minutes the doctor came in and said that his body was so overheated and his organs were working extra hard, and he was very, very sick. They told me it wasn’t a good situation,” the distraught father explained.
Drake lived with his father, four sisters, and grandparents.
