According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are edging closer to signing teenage centre-back Leo Hjelde.

Hjelde is on Celtic’s books at the moment, and he’s a player Leeds have had an eye on for quite some time now.

Indeed, Hjelde had been linked throughout the summer, but negotiations had hit something of an impasse until this point.

However, it now seems as though the Whites’ interest in Hjelde is progressing well and they’re moving closer to signing the defender.

So, what type of player is Hjelde? Well, he’s a left-footed centre-back, he stands at 6 ft 2 and he’s played at U18 level on the international stage.

He’s already been described as ‘the next Virgil van Dijk’ by Ross County manager John Hughes, and praise for a defender doesn’t come much higher than that.

Leeds have a number of talented young defenders on the books with the likes of Charlie Cresswell and Pascal Struijk making waves at Elland Road, and Hjelde could be the next on the production line.

Hjelde would initially join to play a part in Mark Jackson’s U23 side, but as we’ve seen time and time again under Marcelo Bielsa, he will have the chance to progress if he impresses.

Leeds could be getting an absolute gem if they can get this one over the line.
