Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s reported pursuit of Lautaro Martinez.
According to The Times on Sunday, Spurs had agreed a £60 million fee with Inter Milan for the red-hot Argentine.
But it seems like that may have been premature because there hasn’t been much concrete developments on Martinez to Tottenham since then.
According to Romano, the Lilywhites absolutely love the player but won’t be able to sign him for £60 million, claiming that the Italians’ asking price is £16 million more than that.
He told The Last Word on Spurs podcast on YouTube: “It’s true that Tottenham had a bid. It was an important bid. They love Lautaro Martinez. They really consider Lautaro Martinez the perfect striker. At the moment the situation is really complicated. Inter are saying ‘no way’ but if there’s a chance, it’ll be for €90 million [£76m].”
Break the bank?
For an additional £16 million, should Tottenham sign him? The answer is of course, yes.
If Spurs sell Harry Kane – and they still might – then they’re going to need to spend big on replacing the Englishman. Well, they won’t be able to replace him, because he’s simply that good.
But they’re certainly going to have to reinvest a chunk of an inevitable nine-figure fee and there’s no use in saving £16 million.
That’s either a lot of money or peanuts, depending on how you look at it, because if the South American does wind up joining another Premier League club – Arsenal are also linked – and kills it in England, it’ll be a dreadful look for the Lilywhites for not spending a little more to secure his signature.
