Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has praised Arsenal youngster Emile Smith Rowe.

Smith Rowe enjoyed a breakout season for the Gunners, and while he came under criticism on Ferdinand’s podcast for his lack of goals, Ferdinand wasn’t open to hearing any of it.

Indeed, the former Manchester United man came out in defence of the Arsenal midfielder, labelling him ‘a player’.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand and co were having a debate over Arsenal’s chances in the upcoming season when Smith Rowe was brought up.

“You’re selling Joe Willock who in the last six months has scored more goals than Emile Smith Rowe in his entire career,” Ferdinand’s co-host said.

“Don’t try to diss Smith Rowe, honestly, Smith Rowe he’s a player bro, Smith Rowe is a player,” Ferdinand said.

More than just goals

Ferdinand was right to defend Smith Rowe amid criticism for his lack of goals.

Sadly, analysis of the modern game has become largely become focused on statistical output and numbers, but Smith Rowe’s game is about so much more than that.

His movement, his vision and his ability to beat a man make him a constant threat for the Gunners, and while he’s not always the man putting the ball in the back of the net, he is always looking to make something happen.

There’s a reason Ferdinand seemingly rates him so highly.
