Who was Officer Ella French?

Ella was a 29-year-old who had joined the department in April 2018. She was a member of the Community Safety Team at Chicago PD. As per her brother, Andrew French, Ella was not married and had no kids either.

At a young age, she and her brother were adopted. Andrew further added that Ella joined the department to “make a difference.”

On August 7, Ella was shot in the head after initiating a traffic stop. Her death was confirmed by the Chicago Police Department on Twitter and Facebook.

The Chicago Police Department released an official statement regarding the incident.

Their Facebook post read: “Late last night, 2 of our own were shot. We lost a sister in blue. Officer Ella French was murdered while conducting a traffic stop with her partners. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and co-workers. The 2nd officer is still fighting for his life. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts.”

At the same time, they also paid a tribute to Ella on their official Twitter account. The post noted: “We will #NeverForget the true bravery she exemplified as she laid her life down to protect others. Please hold her family, loved ones, and fellow Chicago Police officers in your thoughts as we grieve the loss of this hero.”

What we know about the incident so far

As per NBC Chicago, Ella was shot in the city’s West Englewood neighborhood during a routine traffic stop.

The shooting took place when Ella and her partner approached one of the vehicles. During their interaction, the passenger in the car opened fire and shot Ella in the head.

At the moment, Ella’s partner is in critical condition. As for the suspects, all three of them have been arrested. However, more details around their identity have not been released so far.

Twitter was filled with tributes and messages for Ella after her death was confirmed.

One user wrote: “My sincere condolences to the family of officer Ella French and all my prayers for her partner who is fighting for his life. This is heartbreaking. Thank you for your servicing, officer French. A life was taken way too soon.”

Another added: “#rip Ella French. You were one of the good ones taken too early by entitlement and lack of respect for human life. You sacrificed yourself so others may feel safe.”

“When’s enough going to be enough? Especially in Chicago. Prayers for her family, coworkers, and all of Chicago dealing with this senseless violence,” said another.
