Edu’s transfer plan to sign £60m player for Arsenal has reportedly failed

Arsenal’s masterplan involving Leicester City’s James Maddison has seemingly failed.

The Gunners are heavily linked with a move for the Leicester playmaker this summer, with the player reportedly wanting a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Arsenal had offered one of Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, Ainsley Maitland-Niles or Joe Willock as a part-exchange to lower the Foxes’ asking price.

But Football London has reported today that Brendan Rodgers isn’t sold on that idea and Edu will ‘likely’ have to offer the full £60 million in order to prise him from The King Power Stadium.

Is he worth it?

It’s certainly hard to answer whether Maddison is worth £60 million.

At 24, the England international certainly has the potential to get a lot better, but is that going to happen at Arsenal?

Mikel Arteta has been the Gunners’ head coach for 18 months and you’d struggle to find many players that the Spaniard has improved.

Kieran Tierney and Bukayo Saka were the club’s stand-out players last season, but their promise was well established before Arteta returned to North London in December of 2019 and even without the former Manchester City assistant, they’d still flourish.

Like every transfer, Arsenal will have an eye on re-sale value but unless Maddison – who scored 10 goals and set up 11 in all competitions last season – rips up the Premier League, it’s difficult to see the Gunners turning a profit.

In terms of risk and reward, this doesn’t seem a safe investment and Edu was spot-on to try include some players in the deal, even if the plan failed.
