Newcastle United have been in contact regarding signing Nathaniel Phillips from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story?

It is being reported this morning that Newcastle have been in contact about signing Liverpool central defender Phillips.

Burnley, Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion have also reportedly been in contact about the 24-year-old.

Liverpool are willing to sell the English centre-back and are looking for between £12 million and £15 million.

Leaving Liverpool for Newcastle?

Phillips got his chance last season due to injury problems for Liverpool’s main centre-backs.

The defender did well and played his part in the Reds finishing in the Premier League top four.

The 24-year-old made 15 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool.

The Englishman scored one goal and gave one assist in those games.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all are back now.

Liverpool have also signed Ibrahima Konate this summer.

Then there is Rhys Williams in the squad as well.

It is going to be extremely hard for Phillips – described by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as “unbelievable” in Goal.com in April 2021 – to even get into matchday squads.

Newcastle are a big and established club in the Premier League, and if the Magpies want him, then manager Steve Bruce surely has a plan for him.
