According to TEAMtalk, Patrick Vieira is thinking about terminating Jean-Philippe Mateta’s loan deal and sending him back to Mainz 05.

What’s the story?

Well, it’s been a tough time for Mateta since he arrived in January.

Crystal Palace signed the 24-year-old on an 18-month loan, where the Eagles are obligated to buy him for £12.8m if certain conditions are met.

Despite that, it sounds as if Vieira has already made a decision on Mateta.

TEAMtalk believe the 45-year-old wants to add more players to his squad on loan.

However, TEAMtalk claim he is currently unable to, as Crystal Palace’s two loan spots are occupied by Conor Gallagher and Mateta.

We’re not sure how factually accurate that is from TEAMtalk, as we believe Premier League clubs are restricted to two domestic loans, but are allowed more international loans.

It would be extremely harsh of Crystal Palace to send the Frenchman back to Germany at this stage.

Roy Hodgson handed Mateta just two Premier League starts, and only seven Premier League appearances in total since his arrival.

Additionally, when he did play, the Sevran-born striker was limited by Hodgson’s defensive style of football.

In truth, the Selhurst Park faithful haven’t really seen enough of Mateta to make a proper judgement on him.

In our view, the south Londoners should – at least – give the Frenchman until January to show what he’s all about.
