Report: After Fabinho, Liverpool now add ‘complete’ £50k-a-week ace to priorities for new deal

Liverpool are now prioritising a new contract for Andrew Robertson alongside Mohamed Salah, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk after Fabinho penned a five-year deal, according to Goal.

The Anfield outfit announced the Brazilian had agreed to extend his Merseyside stay until 2026 on Monday. Fabinho joined the Reds from Monaco in a £44m transfer in 2018 and has since helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to win the Champions League and Premier League.

The 27-year-old additionally helped aid Klopp’s injury crisis last term by frequently playing at centre-half or right-back, plus in midfield. Now, after Fabinho agreed on new terms, Liverpool are prioritising new contracts for Robertson, Salah, Allison and Van Dijk.

Liverpool want to keep the core of Klopp’s side together having so far only signed defender Ibrahima Konate this summer. Georginio Wijnaldum and Harry Wilson have also left the club, while several fringe players remain available for transfers.

Robertson is the latest player that Liverpool have made a priority for a new contract. The Athletic reported in July that the Reds are prioritising Salah over Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. Fabrizio Romano also noted last month that Alisson was close to agreeing on terms.

Romano added that talks are also ongoing with Van Dijk, having claimed in May that he was open to discussions. The £180,000-per-week defender, out of contract in 2023, has topped Liverpool’s shortlist of players due for new contracts since January.

Liverpool will now hope to agree on terms with Van Dijk, Salah, Alisson and Robertson soon after renewing Fabinho’s contract. Robertson started all 38 Premier League fixtures, plus eight of 10 Champions League ties, last season, while offering seven assists.

After Fabinho, Robertson deserves new Liverpool contract

Robertson certainly deserves a new contract at Liverpool, alongside Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson after Fabinho extended his terms. The Scottish full-back has been an ever-present part of Klopp’s top-flight backline since joining from Hull for £8m in 2017.

He also offered 11 assists in 2018/19, 12 in 2019/20 and seven last season, which he will be desperate to better next term. Yet only Mane provided more in the Premier League for the Reds in 2020/21 with eight. Robertson also played 300 more minutes than any teammate.
