At just 13-years-old, Sky Brown just became the youngest ever British Olympic medal winner.

The teen was awarded a bronze medal in Tokyo this morning after delivering an incredible performance in the women’s skateboarding event.

If you watched the event, you may have noticed that Sky doesn’t actually have a British accent, and she doesn’t live in Great Britain either.

So, why does she compete for Team GB? Is she actually British? Let’s get to know her a little better.

TOKYO, JAPAN – AUGUST 04: Sky Brown of Team Great Britain competes during the Women’s Skateboarding Park Preliminary Heat on day twelve of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Ariake Urban Sports Park on August 04, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

Is Sky Brown British?

Sky Brown is of British-Japanese heritage. She was born in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother and British father.

The teen still lives in Miyazaki, but spends half of the year in California, United States, hence the American accent.

Sky never resides in Britain, but she competes for Team GB because her father is British, which makes her half British.

She previously said she would compete for Japan, but changed her mind as she preferred the “more relaxed approach” of the British Skateboarding Association.

Sky’s skateboarding career explored

Sky is the youngest professional skateboarder in the world, and was selected to represent Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics when she was just twelve.

She doesn’t have a skateboarding coach in Japan, and instead learns all of her tricks from YouTube. Sky practices on a ramp in her back garden because there are no skate parks near her home in Miyazaki.

In 2016 at just eight, she competed in her first big tournament, the Vans US Open. Since then, she has competed at the Asian Continental Finals, Vans Park Series, X Games and World Skateboarding Championships.

Whilst training in California in 2020, Sky suffered a horrific fall from a halfpipe ramp which resulted in a skull fracture and broken wrist, but she made a full recovery.
