After first appearing on our screens in April 2020, Outer Banks is back on Netflix for its highly anticipated second season.

Season 2 continues the story of John B, Sarah Cameron and the Pogues in their hunt for treasure that is tied to the mysterious disappearance of John B’s father.

However, it’s been 15 months since Outer Banks was last on our screens, and so it’s fair to say a few key details have slipped out of fans’ minds, such as the meaning behind the group’s name, the Pogues, and their rivalry with the Kooks.

Outer Banks season 2: Release date and plot

Season 2 of Outer Banks arrived on July 30th, 2021 and begins with John B and Sarah en route to Nassau following on immediately from the cliffhanger ending of season 1.

The Bahamas destination proves fortuitous as it’s the rumoured location of the legendary treasure at the heart of Outer Banks, the golden cross of Santo Domingo that’s supposedly worth up to $400 million.

However, John B, Sarah and the Pogues are not the only ones after the cross and several new players are added to the increasingly dangerous game.

What is a Pogue?

  • Pogue is the name given to the working-class kids who live and work in Outer Banks’ coastal town.

The name seemingly gets its origins from American military slang as Pogue (or POG) refers to a ‘Person Other than a Grunt’ which essentially means any non-combat service staff who work to support the military without fighting themselves.

In the context of Outer Banks, the Pogues are there to make life as easy as possible for the town’s seasonal and wealthy residents.

John B is the leader of the Pogues in Outer Banks and is joined by fellow Pogues, JJ and Pope.

What is a Kook?

  • A Kook is a wealthy resident and rival to the Pogues.

Opposite the Pogues in Outer Banks are the Kooks, the name given to the town’s wealthy residents.

The name Kook is a surfing reference and means “A wanna-be surfer of limited skill.”

Both Sarah Cameron and Kiara “Kie” Carrera begin the Netflix series as Kooks but abandon their wealthy backgrounds for a life of adventure with the Pogues.
