Celtic appear to be closing in on a new defensive signing with Shamrock Rovers talent Liam Scales now wanted at Parkhead.

The Bhoys have added one centre back this summer in Carl Starfelt, but Ange Postecoglou certainly needs more defensive additions.

Fans want big additions, but Celtic are now pursuing a deal for Shamrock Rovers ace Scales – a pursuit that doesn’t quite fall under the ‘big move’ bracket.

Scales, 22, joined Shamrock Rovers from UCD in 2020, and has boasted an impressive attacking record with three goals and five assists in 45 games.

Big and strong at 6ft 4in tall, Scales can play as a left-sided centre back or even as a left wing back, with his naturally left-footed nature surely appealing.

The Scottish Sun claim that Celtic have opened talks to sign Scales in a six-figure deal – though it may have to wait until after Rovers play their Europa Conference League game on Thursday.

Celtic fans may not know all that much about Scales, and may even feel the club needs to target higher profile players, but Shamrock Rovers fans love him.

Some believe that Scales will be the bargain of the century and is ultimately worth much more than a six-figure fee.

Others think Scales ‘oozes class’ and will walk into the Celtic side, with Rovers supporters absolutely gutted to see him go.
