Rangers are closing in on the transfer of FC Honka striker Juan Alegria with negotiations with his Finnish side at an advanced stage, according to the Daily Record.

Honka will not block Alegria from joining Steven Gerrard’s Rangers after exiting the Europa Conference League. Domzale eliminated Vesa Vasara’s side in the second qualifying round after winning the second leg 1-0 to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory last week.

Rangers had wanted to sign Alegria in January, but the UK’s exit from the European Union made the Gers shelve their plans. But they have since maintained negotiations with Honka, who have always accepted the 19-year-old is destined for bigger things.

Rangers share Honka’s expectations of Alegria progressing well in years to come and believe they can develop him at Ibrox. The Gers feel the Colombia youth international has an exciting future ahead, and will join compatriot Alfredo Morelos in Glasgow.

Alegria made his senior Honka debut last September and has made a total of 23 first-team outings to date. He is yet to fully establish himself in the senior game, however, with four career starts. Of which two came in July during Veikkausliiga fixtures with Oulu and Lahti.

Alegria additionally scored his only senior goal in February during a Suomen Cup tie with Mariehamn. Gerrard will want to see the teenager now make great strides on his arrival at Ibrox. Especially after playing just eight minutes over three Europa Conference League ties.

Rangers deal for Honka prospect Alegria imminent

The Daily Record’s report suggests Rangers’ deal to sign Honka talent Alegria is imminent. Handing Gerrard a player who has long been on the Gers’ radar and one they back for a big role. Newonce Sport claimed in December that he could one day replace Morelos at Ibrox.

Alegria, then, will have big shoes to fill on his arrival in Glasgow. Morelos was among Rangers’ top scorers last season with 17 goals in 50 games across all competitions. And Gerrard will hope to see the 24-year-old flourish and be as readily available again this term.

Morelos additionally only sat out six games all term in a frantic campaign, and added 13 assists to his record. Strike partner Kemar Roofe may have netted 18 times, but the 27-year-old only offered three assists. As many as centre-back Connor Goldson also provided.
