Darren Bent has told talkSPORT (03/08/21 at 6:45 am) that if he was Steve Bruce then he would be ‘fuming’ with Callum Wilson’s comments about the Newcastle manager.
Ahead of the new Premier League season, Wilson claimed that Graeme Jones is more ‘tactically aware’ than the Newcastle boss, as quoted by the Chronicle.
Wilson’s comments about Newcastle’s number two compared to the main man in the hot seat have sparked quite a reaction.
Former Premier League striker, Bent, who worked with Bruce at Sunderland, shared his thoughts on what he was hearing from Wilson.
“Am I Steve Bruce in this and I have just heard that?” asked Bent. “Then I am fuming. You have got to be.
“Not only are you throwing shade on Steve Bruce’s management style, but you are basically saying it from the quotes that Steve Bruce wasn’t up to it until Graeme Jones got there.
“I think the ‘tactically aware’ line matters. But Callum Wilson could also be taking from his own perspective.
“To be fair to Steve Bruce he has had good coaches with him. At Sunderland, he had Eric Black. I probably worked better with him than Steve Bruce.
“But I used to talk to Eric Black a little bit more because he was a centre-forward as well. But I still wouldn’t come out and say ‘Eric Black is more tactically aware than Steve Bruce’.”
Bruce isn’t a popular figure amongst Newcastle fans as it is and this will only add fuel to the fire.
Since the Englishman stepped foot through the St James’ Park doors, there has been a lot of talk about his tactics and lack of ability to think like a modern-day coach.
And Wilson, who didn’t intentionally look to disrespect his manager, has managed to speak in a negative fashion about him.
Well, if things go wrong for Newcastle fans next season then there’s no doubt that Wilson’s quotes will be used against Bruce.
