The music in a film or TV series can often make or break the final product and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is certainly helped by its choice of songs.

It should come as little surprise that a film directed by James Gunn would feature a toe-tapping soundtrack as he was the one who helmed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films which also make stellar use of music.

But just which songs appear in The Suicide Squad’s killer soundtrack?

Release date and plot

The Suicide Squad arrived in cinemas here in the UK on July 30th and will be following suit in US theatres on August 5th and the HBO Max streaming service on August 6th.

A standalone sequel to 2016’s film, The Suicide Squad sees the titular Task Force X dropped onto the picturesque island of Corto Maltese but this is no summer vacation.

On the orders of Amanda Waller, the Suicide Squad are tasked with infiltrating a Nazi-era prison laboratory and destroying every trace of the highly secretive Project Starfish.

However, one wrong move and they’re dead. Whether that’s thanks to the soldiers guarding Corto Maltese, one of their own squadmates or even at the hands of Amanda Waller herself.

The Suicide Squad score

  • The Suicide Squad’s cinematic score was composed by John Murphy.

The 56-year-old Liverpool-born composer and musician has been working in the music industry since 1980 and made his film score debut in 1992.

John Murphy’s most recognisable work has come in the likes of 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later, 2006’s Miami Vice and 2010’s Kick-Ass where he collaborated with Henry Jackman, Marius de Vries and Ilan Eshkeri.

The score for The Suicide Squad features plenty of moody guitar sounds to mirror the choice of songs and the action-heavy plot of the film.

After working on The Suicide Squad, John Murphy already has his next project lined up as he will also be scoring the upcoming Peacemaker TV series which will also be helmed by James Gunn and is coming to HBO Max in January 2022.

The Suicide Squad hit cinemas in the UK on July 30th and will be following suit in the US on August 5th in theatres and August 6th on HBO Max.
