Granit Xhaka may now end up staying at Arsenal – and Roma could now move to sign Gunners target Teun Koopmeiners instead.
That’s according to Quotidiano in Italy, who claim that signing Xhaka has now become Roma’s most difficult target this summer.
Arsenal have allegedly offered Xhaka a new contract to stay after months of speculation surrounding a potential move to Roma.
Jose Mourinho has wanted Xhaka to make the move to the Italian capital for some time now, but a deal couldn’t be done before the European Championships and doesn’t look any more likely now.
Xhaka even scored for Arsenal against Chelsea on Sunday, and all indications point towards him staying with Arsenal now.
That means Roma are moving on whilst Arsenal maybe don’t need to go into the market for another midfielder, and that change in stance could impact Teun Koopmeiners.
It’s now claimed that Roma have prepared a move for Koopmeiners as an alternative for Xhaka – and that means his dream move to Arsenal now looks unlikely.
De Telegraaf reported last week that Koopmeiners is an Arsenal fan and the Gunners wanted to sign him to replace Xhaka.
With Xhaka now seemingly staying, Koopmeiners’ most likely destination is Roma, meaning that dream move to North London could pass him by.
The Dutchman, 23, is already AZ Alkmaar captain and smashed 17 goals from midfield last season whilst also picking up seven assists.
Koopmeiners is left footed, primarily operates from deep and isn’t the fastest midfielder of all time, so you can certain see the parallels to Xhaka – and it’s no surprise to see his future so attached to that of the Swiss ace.
