Netflix’s treasure drama Outer Banks continued the characters’ thrilling escapade in Season 2, as John B and Sarah adapted to life as fugitives.

As the narrative took a turn to the Bahamas, many lives were put on the line. The characters’ race to obtain the pile of gold worth half a billion was not without obstacles, and some found out about the consequences of treasure hunting the hard way.

Despite the gold firmly in everyone’s crosshairs, there was another treasure that was sought after in Season 2 – the ‘shroud’.

What is the Shroud of Turin?

  • In the real world, the Shroud of Turin is a curious piece of linen that bears an image of Jesus of Nazareth, which is said to be his burial cloth.

The shroud is reported to have first appeared in the 13th or 14th century in France and passed through centuries of doubt from officials.

In 1978, the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) began to vigorously test the cloth’s authenticity and later labelled it a “mystery” in 1981.

In 1988, it was revealed that the shroud underwent radiocarbon dating, which confirmed that it was a material from the medieval period. In 2013, an Italian researcher pinpointed the exact date of the fibers to be between 300BC and 400AD.

In 2015, the shroud was shown for the last time to the public before it was taken for more testing. The last report came in 2018 when researchers claimed that the blood flow on the shroud was not consistent with the events that surrounded it.

The Shroud of Turin remains a world mystery to this day.

Outer Banks Season 2: The Shroud Artefact

In Outer Banks Season 2, the shroud is thought to possess extraordinary healing powers, which explains Limbrey’s (Elizabeth Mitchell) motivation to find it.

It is explained that the shroud is thought to be inside Denmark Tanny’s cross, which is why Limbrey hired Pope and the Pogues to find it.

Despite the show’s turn to the supernatural side, creators Josh and Jonas Pate revealed that the show will follow more of a religious thread, colored by the characters’ belief that the shroud possesses something magical.

Outer Banks season 2 is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on July 30th, 2021.
