After premiering back in May, Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS) came to an end on July 30th and promises to leave an East High-shaped hole in our Friday night viewing for the foreseeable future.

After season 2 focused on the intense rivalry between East High and North High, as they both performed versions of Beauty and the Beast, the finale brought the cast back down to earth as they realised the battle between the two schools had overshadowed their friendships and enjoyment of the musical.

However, with season 2 coming to an end, attention has obviously turned to the future of the series, with fans asking if HSMTMTS will return to Disney+ for season 3.

Season 2 finale recap

The 12th and final episode of HSMTMTS arrived on Disney+ on July 30th, 2021.

Titled Second Chances, the episode takes place following East High’s performance of Beauty and the Beast and the cast celebrate what was a ‘passable’ show after so many pre-production worries.

Several key story threads were left dangling by the end of the episode including how the Menkies judge rated the performance as well as how 25% of the final grade would come down to a performance on the night which continues to stress Miss Jenn out.

The students dismiss the results, though, and instead hope to spend some quality time together following the gruelling production.

However, while the Wildcats have never been closer, Nini could well be on her own path to stardom – like Olivia Rodrigo in real life – after Gina helps her get in contact with her brother, who is now a famous music producer.

On top of that, the season ends with a threatening message from North High with the promise that “this summer’s about to get hot.”

Will HSMTMTS return for season 3?

  • It has not been officially announced if HSMTMTS will return for season 3.

However, given the cliffhanger ending of season 2, with the threatening message from North High, it seems almost certain that the series will return in some form, whether that’s a new season or a collection of special episodes.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly following the finale, HSMTMTS showrunner, Tim Federle, was coy on the show’s season 3 chances.

Talking conditionally about Nini’s story arc, he said: “I hope if we get a next season that we can explore a really original path for Nini that doesn’t just feel ripped from the headlines, both for the actor’s sake and for the audience.”

Could HSMTMTS continue without Olivia Rodrigo?

Following the season 2 finale, Olivia Rodrigo’s character Nini – who has been a key component of the series so far – gets in contact with Gina’s brother, Jamie, who is a famous music producer, which could potentially see Nini leave East High to pursue a career in music, almost mirroring the real-life success of Olivia Rodrigo herself.

Again, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Tim Federle admitted that he wouldn’t stand in the way of Olivia’s music success even if it meant her departing HSMTMTS.

“What I will say is, it’s hard to imagine High School Musical without Olivia, but Olivia is also experiencing a level of success and fame and opportunity that I would never want to stand in the way of,” he explained. “I want the show to succeed, but the actors who make the show are always more important to me than the product.”

“If I get to season 3 or beyond, there are a lot of stories I would still like to tell. For now, Nini is definitely on her own journey.”

Season 2 of HSMTMTS concluded on Disney+ on July 30th, 2021.
