Some Arsenal fans on Twitter are reacting to the fact that Ben White will wear the number four shirt at the club next season and beyond.
The Gunners finally confirmed on Friday that they had signed the 23-year-old from Brighton & Hove Albion in what was a £50 million deal.
When White was unveiled, he held the number four jersey – last worn by Arsenal defender William Saliba.
The North Londoners have already loaned out the 20-year-old defender to Marseille.
But some Arsenal fans aren’t happy that the big Frenchman’s number was allocated to White instead.
Arsenal signed Saliba for £27 million over two years ago and yet despite that, the former Saint Etienne powerhouse hasn’t made his senior debut for the club.
As a result, a lot of Gunners fans are protective over the young centre-back, but the context here is that Saliba is not going to be at the club until at least next summer.
And considering he has never played for Arsenal, technically he was never really allocated the famous number four jersey, previously worn by the likes of Patrick Vieira and Cesc Fabregas.
The good news is that Marseille don’t have an obligatory purchase option to sign the big man, meaning there’s still a chance that he can save his career in North London.
But if he does, he won’t be wearing the number four.
