Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, movie releases have been impacted like never before with countless films either moving online or having their release dates delayed.

The Green Knight is one such film to fall victim to the pandemic as its original release on May 29th was pushed back by more than a year.

Release date and plot

After its original May 2020 release date was scrapped, The Green Knight will be arriving on screens in the US and Canada on July 30th, 2021.

The film will be released throughout August in many countries around the world but no release dates have been announced thus far for the UK and Ireland beyond simply ‘2021’.

Based on the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the film tells the story of King Arthur’s headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring and dangerous quest to confront the titular Green Knight.

On his epic adventure, Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) must contend with ghosts, giants, thieves and schemers on a journey that will ultimately define his character and prove his worth.

That’s right, fans wanting to watch the David Lowery-helmed film will have to venture out to the cinema in order to watch as there is no option to stream the film from home just yet.

As the film is releasing exclusively in cinemas, The Green Knight will not be coming to any of the major streaming services upon its release including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max.

Although there is nothing stopping the film from being added to one of the aforementioned services later down the line.


Reactions to The Green Knight

Fans venturing out to see The Green Knight should be in for a medieval treat as the early reactions and reviews of the film have been hugely positive.

At the time of writing, the film currently stands at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 37 reviews while the film also boasts an 89/100 Metacritic score.

While The Guardian awarded the film four stars in its review, Digital Spy went half a star better in its rating while Variety labelled the film as a “vital and fascinating artefact.”
