Reported Leeds United, Leicester City and Arsenal target Josip Brekalo has asked to leave VFL Wolfsburg this summer – much to the frustration of the Bundesliga outfit (SportBuzzer).
After ending their long exile from the Champions League last season – Die Wolfe finished fourth and thereby secured a seat at Europe’s top table – the summer has still been full of challenges, with one of Germany’s best-ran clubs looking to keep a talented crop of players together.
Manager Oliver Glasner, the mastermind behind a superb 2020/21 campaign, was spirited away by Eintracht Frankfurt in May.
Two months on, one of Wolfsburg’s most talented attackers looks set to follow in Glasner’s footsteps; not necessarily at Frankfurt but by forcing his way out of the Volskwagen Arena.
According to The Mirror (25 July, page 62), Leicester are interested, with Brekalo the latest in a long line of wingers to be linked with a switch to the King Power Stadium.
Everton, Leeds and Arsenal have also been linked, with Corriere dello Sport claiming that Mikel Arteta has specifically requested the 23-year-old Croatia international as an ambitious rebuilding project continues to go from strength to strength.
Is Wolfsburg winger Josip Brekalo heading to the Premier League?
With just two weeks to go before the new season gets underway, Brekalo could hardly have picked a worse time to tell Wolfsburg that he wants a fresh start, his attitude during recent training sessions allegedly raising concerns about his commitment to the cause.
“(Brekalo’s future) is a constant topic, which I find a little strange,” said managing director Jorg Schmadtke, who has also been forced to address speculation regarding the future of Tottenham target Maxence Lacroix.
A 2016 signing from Dinamo Zagreb, there is a feeling that Brekalo’s development has stalled somewhat in recent times, even if he ended last season with a first career hat-trick in Wolfsburg’s 3-0 victory over Union Berlin.
It is understood that the Zagreb-born flyer is valued in the region of £16 million.
