Pierluigi Gollini has claimed that he was ‘right’ to leave Aston Villa after only six months, as he told Tottenham’s official YouTube channel.
The 26-year-old joined Villa after they were relegated to the Championship in 2016, and fast forward to today, and he has since signed for Tottenham.
Things didn’t go well for Gollini in Villa colours, and leaving after only half a season was proof of that.
But five years later, the Italian is a changed man and player, with Spurs putting belief in his talents by snapping him up from Atalanta on a temporary basis.
Ahead of his return to England, Gollini thinks he made the right call to leave Villa in such an abrupt fashion.
“Yes, I was on the bench (on facing Spurs in the FA Cup when he was at Villa),” said Gollini. “I didn’t play. We lost and I only played for six months at Villa.
“I had the chance to go to Atalanta. I thought that was the right choice to do at the time. And I guess I was right.”

In truth, for Gollini, it was a case of joining Villa at the wrong time given the mess the club was in.
But it showed character and bottle from the shot-stopper to throw himself into such a pressured environment and at such a young age.
And whilst he got knocked down during that moment, he has since got back up and he is now starting to show that his career is on the upward trajectory.
Given that Gollini arrives on loan, it will be interesting to see if he pushes ahead of Hugo Lloris as Tottenham’s number one, or will he have to fight his way to that spot?
