Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in Manchester United defender and reported Aston Villa target Axel Tuanzebe, according to The Telegraph.
What’s the story?
The Telegraph are reporting today that Newcastle have held talks with Premier League rivals United over signing Tuanzebe in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies have discussed both a loan deal and a permanent transfer with the Red Devils.
A loan deal is more likely given that Newcastle do not have much money to spend.
Competition for Aston Villa
Newcastle being so active in their pursuit of Tuanzebe will come as a blow to Bruce’s former club Villa.
That’s because the Villans have also been linked with the 23-year-old central defender.
The Express & Star reported earlier this month that Villa are interested in signing the youngster on a loan deal.
Villa manager Dean Smith worked with Tuanzebe during his loan spell at Villa Park, and described him as “a terrific guy” who has “got a terrific attitude”, as quoted on TribalFootball in November 2019.

Good move for Axel Tuanzebe?
United are reportedly on the verge of signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
This means that Tuanzebe will find it extremely hard to get regular playing time at Old Trafford next season.
The 23-year-old made only four starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Red Devils last season.

If Newcastle are so keen on Tuanzebe that they have already held talks with United, then the 23-year-old should seriously consider a move to St. James’ Park, at least on a loan deal.
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce worked with the young central defender when they were at Villa, and he will know how to get the best out of the youngster.
