Rangers defender Rhys Breen is set to leave Ibrox and sign for Championship side Dunfermline, according to a report.

The Daily Record claim the Rangers defender will cut short his season-long loan with American side Orange County SC and join Peter Grant’s side in the coming days.

Dunfermline have recently signed Rangers Academy star Kai Kennedy on loan for the season and the forward made his debut in the 4-1 win over Stenhousemuir yesterday.

Breen joined Orange County on loan earlier this year but has been in and out of the side during his time in the US.

He was nowhere to be seen last night as the USL side drew 2-2 with rivals Sacramento Republic.

The defender also spent time on loan with Partick Thistle and Queen of the South last season but hasn’t really kicked on to challenge for a first-team spot at Ibrox.

Wtih the likes of Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Niko Katic and Jack Simpson all competing for first-team places and Leon King and Kyle McClelland impressing for the B team, it’s a tough time for central defenders to break through at Rangers.

A move to the Championship should be a good test for Breen and it will be interesting to see whether Rangers retain any sort of sell on clause to benefit in the future.
