Tottenham Hotspur were desperate to bring Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini back to the Premier League this summer, the agent of the former Aston Villa man told Tuttomercatoweb

Last summer, when Jose Mourinho was looking for a goalkeeper capable of sharing a dressing room with Hugo Lloris, Spurs went all-in on a 30-something veteran with two top-flight titles and 75 England caps on his CV.

But the experienced Joe Hart was only ever intended to be a reliable back-up and little more; someone who would feature intermittently in the Europa League group-stages and during the odd Carabao Cup outing.

Gollini, however, will arrive with a very different role in mind.

The Italy international is eight years Hart’s junior.

After starring as Atalanta qualified for the Champions League yet again in 2020/21, the one-time Manchester United youngster will be expected to put Lloris under the sort of pressure he has seldom felt during almost a decade as the club’s undisputed number one.

Gollini will arrive on an initial loan deal; one that will turn into a £13 million permanent transfer once he has played 20 games in Tottenham colours (Sky Sports).

Will Pierluigi Gollini be a success at Tottenham?

“It is an opportunity that he deserved and Tottenham wanted him so much,” said Beppe Riso, the 26-year-old’s agent.

“I repeat, he deserved this, he always done well, he did well in the Champions League and for him it is a great chance.

“He has a special relationship with England, he has already played there even as a kid. We have been working on this deal for a while.”

Gollini will return to England with a point to prove, having failed to make the grade as a youngster at Manchester United, before struggling to adapt to life in the Championship during a brief spell under Roberto di Matteo and Steve Bruce at Villa Park.
