Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media after Jurgen Klopp told the Reds’ club website that he will look into playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a false-nine again.

Klopp experimented with Oxlade-Chamberlain occupying a central attacking position during the Anfield outfit’s pre-season friendlies with Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart on Tuesday.

Liverpool played 30-minute matches against the Austrian and German outfits, and will next face Mainz on Friday. Oxlade-Chamberlain could again feature in the role Roberto Firmino usually occupies, after impressing his boss in the training camp games.

Klopp reserved praise for Oxlade-Chamberlain following Liverpool’s pair of 1-1 draws. Divock Origi opened the scoring against Wacker Innsbruck before Ronivaldo found the bottom corner. Sadio Mane then equalised against Stuttgart after Phillipp Forster’s neat finish.

Speaking after the games, Klopp said: “Ox, you could see in the first few minutes, immediately that it is an option, definitely. We will see how that goes on.”

Liverpool fans react to Klopp’s plans for Oxlade-Chamberlain

Klopp playing Oxlade-Chamberlain as a false-nine is not new, having occasionally adopted the role for Liverpool last season. The former Arsenal winger, who the Reds paid £35m to sign in 2017, also told his club’s website earlier this month ‘I find it quite natural’.

But some Liverpool fans are not happy with Klopp persisting with the idea of playing Oxlade-Chamberlain as a false-nine. Instead, they expect the idea will backfire and come back to haunt the Reds next season when they battle for a better Premier League campaign.

The 27-year-old offered just one goal and one assist in the top-flight last term as the Anfield outfit snuck a Champions League place on the final day. His goal did, however, come from a false-nine position against Burnley in the penultimate fixture.

But some Liverpool fans would prefer Klopp to sign an out-and-out striker than persist with Oxlade-Chamberlain in the role. So, here are some of the messages shared…
