The agent of Premier League misfit Bernard has played down speculation linking the Everton winger with a move to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, speaking to Sport24

If the Brazil international was hoping for a new lease of life under Rafa Benitez, it appears he may be disappointed.

Bernard was already finding opportunities hard to come by at Goodison Park. He started just three league games during Carlo Ancelotti’s first and only full season at the helm – and now looks set to fall further down the pecking order.

Everton are closing in on the signings of former Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend and Bayer Leverkusen’s Demarai Gray, while Dwight McNeil of Burnley is another target.

But reports suggesting Bernard could continue his career in Russia appear to be wide of the mark, for now at least.

Has Bernard played his last game for Everton as Zenit come calling?

“I haven’t heard anything and I don’t know about it. Nobody from Zenit contacted me,” agent Adriano Spadoto said, squashing rumours regarding a potential move to the so-called Venice of the north.

Taking home an eye-watering £100,000 a week, Bernard is one of Everton’s highest earners.

You would think, then, he would be ripe for the chop as the Toffees look to trim the fat from a bloated squad while reducing a wage bill more befitting a squad of ‘Galacticos’ than one containing Fabian Delph, Cenk Tosun and Andre Gomes.

Everton have already released Theo Walcott, Yannick Bolasie and Mo Besic – three players who set the club back almost £60 million – on free transfers this summer while Josh King has joined Watford after a forgettable loan spell.

Bernard could be next in line.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker was linked with a move to the United Arab Emirates earlier this year but that trail appears to have gone cold.
