Manchester United are apparently planning to keep hold of all four first-team goalkeepers for the upcoming campaign.
This is according to The Athletic, who claim that David De Gea and Dean Henderson will remain at the club this summer.
Both have been tipped with a potential move in this transfer window, but it appears neither are ready to leave Old Trafford just yet.
The Athletic state that Wolverhampton Wanderers had made an inquiry for Henderson, yet United rejected this offer.
De Gea’s future has been on tenterhooks for some time, a concern that became even stronger after he lost his no.1 spot to his English teammate.
However, the Spaniard shot-stopper made it clear to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he wanted to stay and win his goalie position back.
So many goalkeepers, so little time
Solskjaer’s other two options are Lee Grant and Tom Heaton.
Grant has hardly played any football for United since he was signed from Stoke City in 2018.
This hasn’t halted the club’s hierarchy from offering him a one-year contract extension.
They also acquired Tom Heaton’s services on a free, who spent over a decade in United’s academy as a youth product.
Typically, Premier League teams only have three senior goalkeepers in their ranks.
Technically, there were four ‘keepers in Solskjaer’s squad last season, although Sergio Romero didn’t kick a competitive ball at all.
Having a quartet of savers on board makes United manager’s decision even harder over who to make his go-to guy between the sticks.
De Gea and Henderson have an ongoing battle, but now Heaton has thrown his hat into the ring after a fine performance against Derby County in pre-season.
