Power Book III: Raising Kanan premiered on July 18th, 2021 on Starz. So who is the actress left to guide Kanan as he begins his drug dealer beginnings?
The new Starz prequel rewinds us back to 1991 to reintroduce us to Kanan Stark, originally portrayed by 50 Cent in the original Power series.
Power Book III follows Kanan (Mekai Curtis) as a 15-year-old teenager growing up in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, as he dips his feet into the world of drugs, eventually graduating into a cocaine distributor with an emerging network of dealers across the city.
We get to meet his mother, Raquel Thomas, in episode 1 “Back in the Day” and with Kanan already getting into fights from the start, it looks like Raquel already has her work cut out for her.
So who is the actress behind the character?
Everything we know about Patina Miller
The 36-year-old was born on November 6, 1984 in Pageland, South Carolina.
With quite the set of pipes, Patina has a background in theatre after graduating with a musical theatre degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
Her career took off with the role of Delores Van Cartier in the West End production of Sister Act, which began in June 2009. Although the show overall received mixed reviews, Patina’s performance was recognised as outstanding, praising her vocals as similar to Whitney Houston and Gloria Gaynor.
She achieved the status of award-winning theatre actress with her Broadway debut of Sister Act, winning Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a musical.
In 2013, she finally received her Tony award for the Leading Player in Pippin‘.
Since then, Patina has transitioned onto our screens as Commander Paylor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2 in 2015.
The actresses next biggest project was in CBS’s political drama Madam Secretary, as Daisy Grant, the press coordinator to Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord.
Even though she’s not originally from New York like her character, Patina has made the city her home. She married venture capitalist David Mars in 2014 , with her mum Robin Burch as the officiant. Together they share daughter Emerson Harper, born on August 9, 2017 and they live in New York City.
What is Patina Miller’s net worth?
With season 2 of Power Book III confirmed before season 1 even aired, Patina will probably see her bank balance rise up soon!
