One of Netflix’s biggest Korean series of 2020 was ‘Sweet Home’, but six months later, rumours about season 2 are circulating online.
2020 may have been a pretty rough year for everyone, but the year was fantastic for fans of Korean dramas on Netflix.
The platforms’ last series to debut hit show was ‘Sweet Home’ in December, a horror series that arguably was one of the best shows (Non-English or otherwise) of the entire year.
Season 1 ended on a thrilling, if not slightly confusing note, but with fans looking ahead to the future, Netflix has had to address a recent set of rumours concerning season 2.
Will there be a Sweet Home season 2?
At the time of writing, Sweet Home has not been renewed for a second season by Netflix. However, the Korean series is almost guaranteed to get a second chapter because of its popularity around the world.
Whilst Netflix does not release the official viewing statistics for their series, we can gauge how popular Sweet Home through other platforms. Currently, Sweet Home is scoring a 7.4/10 on IMDB, 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.8/10 on MyDramaList.
Interestingly, the director of Sweet Home hinted at the possibility of a second season at a press conference earlier this month.
“While we were writing, we completed the end of the storyline ourselves, so there are a couple things that came out after we were done,” he revealed. “If the opportunity arises, we want to also introduce the monsters that we weren’t able to. We want to stay true to the original.” – Lee Eung-bok, via Bustle.
On July 9th 2021, an article from Soompi said that “industry representatives reported that the drama will begin filming a second season in December.”
However, Netflix recently addressed these reports, stating that “Nothing has been decided yet regarding the production of season 2.”
Sweet Home S2 potential release date…
- A release date for Sweet Home season 2 has not been officially confirmed, but HITC predicts that the hit Korean series will return to Netflix in Summer 2022.
Whilst there is no official word on the potential release date, fans should prepare themselves for a long wait for season 2.
Sweet Home is an adaptation of the incredibly popular Line Webtoon, but the Netflix series didn’t stick completely to the original.
According to a translated version of an interview on Reddit, the authors didn’t “follow 100% of [the] Webtoon story” as they wanted to explore “different perspectives.”
This means that production on a second season would have to wait until such a storyline and script can be created that can match season 1. As you can imagine with such complex characters and a well-crafted narrative as in Sweet Home, this will likely take several months to complete.
Season 1 took over eight months to film, with production being limited in its final weeks because of the pandemic. Assuming that season 2 will experience a similarly intense production-schedule, filming may not be completed until the end of May 2022 – in line with the reports in Soompi.
An optimistic prediction would be for a Spring 2022 premiere but considering the production of Sweet Home, a Summer or Fall 2022 release is the more realistic prediction.
We are expecting the majority of the cast members from season 1 to reprise their roles, again in line with the Soompi article:
- Song Kang as Cha Hyun-soo
- Lee Jin-wook as Pyeon Sang-wook
- Lee Si-young as Seo Yi-kyung
- Go Min-si as Lee Eun-yoo
- Park Gyu-young as Yoon Ji-soo
- Go Yoon-jung as Park Yoo-ri
- Kim Sang-ho as Han Du-sik
This article will be updated as soon as more information on season 2 is revealed.
