Reports suggesting Bosun Lawal is on the verge of signing a three-year deal at Celtic haven’t come as a surprise to anyone in Hertfordshire.
Watford supporters are used to seeing the club’s most exciting young talent walk away from Vicarage Road in search of opportunities elsewhere.
And who can blame Lawal, really, as he prepares to sign on the dotted line at Parkhead, committing his future to the Scottish Premiership giants until summer 2024?
According to The Athletic reporter Adam Leventhal, Watford were only willing to hand an initial one-year deal to a man named the club’s academy player of the year just weeks ago.
Bosun Lawal looks to be heading for Celtic
Celtic, in contrast, can offer the 18-year-old midfield dynamo a chance to hone his talents at a club where Virgil van Dijk, Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard made their name, all the while ensuring Lawal can get his head down and stop fretting about his future.
Furthermore, in Ange Postecoglou Celtic have a coach famed on the other side of the globe for placing his faith in unproven youngsters.
Whichever way you frame it, Lawal’s decision feels like the right one.
“You know what? He’s got a little bit of (Abdoulaye) Doucoure about him,” Watford captain Troy Deeney told the Observer, comparing his young teammate to a man who joined Everton for £30 million in 2020.

“He can get past people effortlessly and keep striding, he has that big long stride. There’s not many young players who catch your eye and you think ‘he’s going to have a career‘ – but he certainly does that.”
Unfortunately for Watford fans, one of the club’s most exciting young players in years will soon be looking to fulfil his vast potential north of the border.
