Alex Crook told talkSPORT that Southampton’s relationship with Tottenham is ‘strained’ after they expressed an interest in Jannik Vestergaard.
The talkSPORT reporter shared that ‘lots of clubs’ want to sign the towering centre-back, including Tottenham, but Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma are leading the chase for his signature.
As Mourinho would have known last season, Spurs are in need of some fresh faces at the back, so it’s no surprise that they are trying to lure the £18 million Saints defensive rock to North London.
But it seems as though Spurs have a number of stumbling blocks in their way, including claims that the player wants a move to Italy.
“He’s into his last year at Southampton, lots of clubs in for him,” said Crook. “Tottenham amongst those.
“My understanding is that Southampton aren’t particularly keen to do business with them. Their relationship with Spurs is strained after the Hojbjerg transfer last summer.
“But Jose Mourinho very much in front of the queue for Jannik Vestergaard and I believe that’s a move the big centre-back wants to make.”

Tottenham don’t need one centre-back, they probably need at least two more faces through the door, especially if Toby Alderweireld departs.
And if Nuno Espirito Santo decides to play three at the back then he might just need more centre-backs than he thinks because it was a real problem area last season.
Eric Dier struggled throughout, Davinson Sanchez hasn’t had a strong season since Spurs paid big bucks for him and Alderweireld could be on his way out.
Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga are bright sparks and are showing real promise. But they are young and inexperienced.
