Chris Kirkland has revealed that he once urged Liverpool to sign Everton and England star Jordan Pickford.

By 10pm tonight, Pickford could be the first Three Lions goalkeeper since Gordon Banks to win a major tournament with his country.

That’s because England are taking on Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

Pickford, a £30 million signing by Everton in 2017, has caught the eye with a series of glittering displays – and former Liverpool stopper Kirkland once recommended him to the Anfield club.

He told The Mirror: “I told some of the Liverpool staff that Jordan was the best young keeper I had worked with. I told them he was going to be something special. But obviously nobody listened and he eventually ended up at Everton!”

No real miss

Pickford’s stock is rising and rightly so because he has been excellent for Gareth Southgate’s side.

But being honest, Liverpool fans wouldn’t swap Alisson for another goalkeeper on planet earth – and definitely not Pickford.

It has only been a couple of months since the Brazilian stopper scored a last-minute winner at West Brom in a result which ultimately helped Jurgen Klopp’s side qualify for the Champions League.

Even without that, the Anfield faithful wouldn’t dream of swapping Alisson for Pickford, who accidentally inflicted a knee injury on Virgil van Dijk last season, with the Dutchman not being seen since.

But personal feelings aside, Liverpool fans won’t be heartbroken to hear that Kirkland’s transfer suggestion was ignored.
